A brief history of social media.

It’s funny, reading this article not only brought back memories of the good ol’ days, it made me realize that I’ve dabbled in every sort of category of social media since the beginning, including phone phreaking, which I’m sure is an alien idea to most people today.

The ironic thing is that I’m not all that social to begin with.

Quantum of Thought

From Wired:

By forcing users to commit their thinking to the bite-size form of the public tweet, Twitter may be giving a powerfully productive new life to a hitherto underexploited quantum of thought: The random, fleeting observation.

Still not convinced that Twitter is here to stay, but this gives me food for thought.  Maybe Twitter will spurn new haiku-like forms of art and contemplation.  Maybe ideas will be packaged and disseminated with hereto unforeseen velocity.  Maybe wisdom will now be as concise as it often seeks to be.

Or maybe somebody will talk about what they had for lunch.

From ideaproject:

Clay Shirky says that the lightning-quick dissemination of news events via social media has heightened the role of emotion. The instantaneous manner with which users of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are inclined to pick up, modify and share messages favors excitement over objectivity.

Eventually, our attention spans will shrink to a capacity of 140-word spurts, we will lose analytical and objective thought to emotional, knee-jerk reaction, and nobody will have the ability to write a book anymore.  Wall-E was more prescient than you even knew.
